What is an NAIC company code?
Short answer: An NAIC code is a number that identifies an insurance company (company code) or a family of companies (group code) in regulators' data. For example, the NAIC's 2025 market share report lists State Farm's group under group code 176,[1] and Texas's complaint-index dataset lists State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company under NAIC code 25178.[2] Using the code helps you find the exact company on your policy.
Company code vs. group code
| What it identifies | Example | Source | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group code | A family of related insurers | STATE FARM GRP: 176 | NAIC 2025 market share report[1] |
| Company code | One insurance company | STATE FARM MUTUAL AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE COMPANY: 25178 | TDI complaint-index dataset (field naic_id)[2] |
Complaint data is generally reported by company. For example, Texas publishes its complaint counts "by company name and line of coverage".[3] So the company code is usually the one you need.
Where to find it
- In regulator datasets and tools, such as the Texas dataset's NAIC ID field,[2] and in NAIC Consumer Insurance Search.
- On our insurer pages, which list selected companies with their codes and sources (e.g. State Farm).
FAQ
Is the NAIC code the same as a license number?
We haven't found an official source that says so, so treat them as different. Check your state regulator for license records.
Why does my brand have several codes?
Brands often write insurance through several companies. For example, the Texas dataset lists several GEICO-named companies, each with a different code.[2]
